The Dash
It’s not the years etched on your headstone that matter most—it’s the dash between them.
I first heard those words years ago on a trail run in the mountains. Runners understand this better than most: when you’re logging long miles together, the miles seem to pull out your deepest thoughts, your hidden fears, and your most honest truths. It becomes a kind of moving therapy you can’t find anywhere else. Everything in life starts to feel like a metaphor for running—and for me, endurance running became the perfect metaphor for watching my daughter Liv fight cancer.
I’ll never forget the day my friend Ed told me his daughter had called him from college, talking about that same dash on a headstone. “It’s not the number of years you’re given,” she said. “It’s what you choose to do with them.”
That idea has stayed with me ever since. Lately, it’s been weighing especially heavy. Spring has arrived, and it’s time to choose Liv’s headstone. I still can’t bring myself to do it.
The Dash
Even now, it’s hard to think about.
When Liv was first diagnosed with cancer, my only thought was: I can’t live without her. Please, God, don’t take her. For the next five years, we rode the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.
Through it all, my mind kept returning to that dash.
My Liv—she truly lived.
In just fifteen short years, Liv reached more people and made a deeper impact than many do in a lifetime. Even when her cancer returned a second and then a third time, she never gave up on her dreams. She was a VIP at the Inspiration4 and Polaris Dawn missions, designed “Asteroid” the zero-g indicator that flew to space and the new mascot for SpaceX. She toured SpaceX in Hawthorne, visited the Starlink factory in Seattle, explored Stoke Space, flew in a fighter jet, and traveled to Argentina, Antarctica, and Japan. She left her mark on the entire space community—all within the five years after her diagnosis.
Cancer doesn’t care how old you are. It was up to us—and especially up to her—to make the most of whatever time she had left.
Liv only had fifteen years between her dash, but they were the best fifteen years of my life as her Mom. Now, for the rest of my own dash, I’ll carry her legacy forward so that her light, her impact, and her spirit continue long after the final date is carved.
